  2.      The Options menu lets you change the current option settings for the program. If you change any of these options, then when you exit the program, you will be asked whether you wish to save the changes as the default options. If you answer Yes, then the next time you run the program, the new options will be in force.  You can also save different options to option files. See Save Options File... later in this section.

  4.      The pages that follow describe all of the options and their possible settings.  Please note that some of these options might not make sense for a beginning bridge player (ex. Bidding Conventions).

  6.      Baron Mode
  7.          You can select either Rubber or Duplicate Bridge. In Rubber Bridge (the default setting), each hand is scored as in rubber bridge, and the rubber scorepad is displayed after each hand. In Duplicate Bridge, after you have played a hand the Baron will replay that hand. Then your score is compared to the Baron's score and the result converted to IMPs (International Match Points), just as in human tournament play.

  9.      Best Hand
  10.         Select either Random Choice (the default), North-South, East-West, North, South, East, or West. Unless Random Choice is selected, the program rearranges the hands after the deal so that the chosen player or partnership gets the best hand or hands.

  12.      Hand Range
  13.           Select either Random Choice, Part Scores, Game Hands, or Slam Hands. The program will deal hands in the appropriate point-count range to North-South. For instance, if you select Game Hands, the North-South hands will have enough points between them to stand a good chance of making a game. Game is not guaranteed, though, so don't be afraid to stop short of game if you think it is the right thing to do.

  15.      Human Players...
  16.          This option lets you to specify which of the four hands is to be played by a human. You can select zero through four human players.

  18.      Playing Level
  19.           This option lets you tell the program how long it can spend thinking about its plays. The default setting is Immediate, which means that the program takes just a small fraction of a second to play a card. We recommend either Immediate or Up to 2 seconds, for normal use. The two higher settings, Up to 5 seconds and Up to 10 seconds, will normally result in different plays only towards the end of a hand.

  21.      Bidding Conventions...
  22.           This option lets you select up to four optional bidding conventions: Weak Two-Bid, Negative Double, Weak Jump Overcall, and Forcing 1NT Response. See section 8.2 of the manual, Optional Conventions, for descriptions of these conventions.

  24.      Easy-To-Read Cards
  25.           While it is nice to see life-like playing cards on the screen, some people might find the characters and suit symbols difficult to read. Select this option if you prefer cards that are easier on the eye.

  27.      Factory Settings
  28.           This option restores all option settings to their factory defaults.

  30.      Save Options File...
  31.           This allows you to save the current option settings to a disk file. The saved options can be restored at a later date using the Read Options File menu option; or you can simply double-click on the options file from the desktop (an options file is identifiable by its Micro Bridge Companion icon with the word "Custom" written across 
  32. it) to run the program with those options in effect. In this way, several people can save their own preferred option settings for instant recall.
